When I first came to this region, my husband drove me daft pointing out the many Ospreys’ nests. I wasn’t interested! Just show me the BIRD! And oh! What an awesome bird it is. Its wingspan can reach approximately 70 inches.

Talk about a bad hair day! This delightful Osprey flew into the trees at Ding Darling, Sanibel after a series of chirping and call-outs to his/her mate who had just flown off with a dazzling wing effect.

The Osprey family is quite happy and well-fed (primarily on fish) in these parts. Don’t forget to look up while here. You’ll find many manmade platforms that these awesome raptors build their nest on. I found this one building its nest in Ding Darling. Its companion was nearby and they made quite a chorus singing out to each other.

On Sanibel Island, you might be charmed to see Dad swooping in with a fresh-caught fish for the chicks supper! I caught this guy on Lover’s Key in the act of bringing home a juicy entree. Have a look at those huge, handy talons. I think Mr. Osprey was a little surprised to see a human on a back road, normally frequented by raccoons or bobcats! Click here for an Osprey gallery
